WYRE FOREST DISTRICT COUNCIL
ANNUAL REPORT OF ACTIVITIES 2007/08

COUNCILLOR JOHN PAUL CAMPION

WARD – SUTTON PARK

Activities

As the Leader of the Council's minority Administration I have extra responsibilities in addition to those of a Ward Councillor.

Administration – I have been proud to be the Leader of the Council during this year and as such I believe I have continued to build a consensus within the Council in terms of the major issues whilst at the same time still progressing with the Council's daily business.

As Leader I have had an interest in a wide range of issues affecting the Council and the wider district and as such I have met regularly with the Chief Executive and all members of the Corporate Management Team to discuss issues pertaining to the district. As Leader, as well as receiving regular briefings, I also hope that I have given strategic direction to the Council in relation to its activities and projects. As the Leader of a minority Administration I fully understand the need for a consensus based approach and as such, I have wherever possible, tried to co-ordinate all Members' views enabling Council to come to balanced decisions.

As part of my role I regularly attended the Council's Audit, Scrutiny and Policy Panels, and regulatory committees. I would hope that my involvement and counsel has been positive throughout the work of these important committees.

I have worked with all Members of the Council in attempting to progress some of the Council's important projects whilst at the same time continuing to streamline the Council's back office machine to achieve better value for money for the local taxpayer. We have made some progress on most of the Council's priority areas but there is always much more to do.

Ward – I continue to be an active Ward Councillor dealing regularly with casework and issues raised by residents on a broad range of issues from litter, parking, anti-social behaviour, potholes, street lighting, leisure facilities, Council Tax enquiries, refuse collection, to name but a few. I have worked closely with my two ward colleagues to address issues and to represent residents' views on important matters.

I have held regular ward surgeries throughout the year as well as communicating with my residents through a regular newsletter. I have made myself available to residents advertising my home telephone number and email address to allow residents to contact me on issues that concern them. I have canvassed a large portion of my ward with my colleagues seeking residents' views on issues and problems.

Achievements During the Year

Administration – One of my main achievements this municipal year from my involvement within the Administration is the approval by the Council of a balanced medium term financial strategy. I worked with all Members of the Council to attempt to reach a consensus budget which brought growth to the district and was affordable to the taxpayer.

During the last year the Council and the administration have seen improvements made in terms of economic regeneration across the district and I believe, have continued to make progress in important regeneration projects such as KTC3, British Sugar, Stourport Basins to name but a few. The year has also seen the conception of a new Corporate plan, drawing together members views into a new Strategic Plan for the Council.

Ward – My ward colleagues and I have been involved in a number of ward issues where we have been able to take action on behalf of residents to resolve a problem that vexes them. One such problem related to on-street parking restrictions near residents' homes that were no longer appropriate and as such my colleagues and I have been able to liaise with the County Council to see those restrictions relaxed and allow residents to park near their homes.

Another achievement my colleagues and I have had this year relate to facilities available in Brinton Park for children and young people. My colleagues and I have been able to use our locally determined funding to provide some new goalposts within Brinton Park so that football can be played in a constructive manner and helps to keep children and young people away from mischief and upsetting residents. This type of small localised project costs very little but gives immediate benefit to the Community.

Members' Surgeries

I, together with my ward colleagues, Tracey Onslow and Marcus Hart have held 2 ward surgeries in the last municipal year on Sunday 2nd September 2007 and Sunday 10th February 2008.
