ANNUAL REPORT OF ACTIVITIES 2010/11
Ward Activities this year, including outside bodies:
Board Member of Horsefair, Broadwaters, Greenhill Partnership.
Member of Cleaner, Greener, Safer Group. (Sion Hill).
Attendee at Broadwaters Residents Action Group (BRAG).
Member of “Friends of St Georges Park” and “Friends of Broadwaters.”
Attendee at Friends of Baxter Gardens and Springfield Park meetings. Regular attendee and panel member – Broadwaters PACT (Partners and Communities Together).
Member of HBGP working party on local social and emotional need. Co-ordinator of public meeting on local car park consultation. Representing residents of Waterside Grange on road adoption. Chair of School Governors. Addressing local issues bought to me by residents – including housing issues, local anti-social behaviour matters, neighbourhood disputes, refuse and street scene issues, parks maintenance (working with parks officers on improvement planning), highway issues and other ad hoc matters which may be raised on issues not always directly related to Council.
Currently acting working in support of the Council Masterplan for the Churchfields area and representing local resident and traders interests in opposition to a number of planning applications incompatible with the Masterplan. Regular liaison with local police and community wardens on local issues throughout the ward. Regular liaison with church leaders and local schools in the community. Regular liaison on local matters with officers of Vestia.
Highlights:
The success of Friends of St. Georges Park receiving an award for “bottom up” community involvement in regenerating the park and the subsequent visit of HRH The Duke of Kent in March.
The national award made to the Cleaner, Greener, Safer Group on behalf of the Sion Hill area under the national standard for local cleanliness.
The potential re-provision of community centre facilities at Upton Road in conjunction with YMCA. The decision to retain Broadwaters Drive car park as a free facility for local residents after a full period of consultation between Council and the Community.
The award of “Big Local” lottery funding to the area which will impact positively in an area of high need.
There is increasing evidence that the community is becoming increasingly involved in local groups and consequently this is having a positive affect in helping to improve the quality of life in parts of the area.
Special Knowledge:
A business background in central government over many years in economic development and regeneration throughout the West Midlands. Expertise in Employment Law and Equal Opportunities Legislation. A post graduate diploma (DipCounc) in Counselling & Psychotherapy – increasingly useful as a Ward Councillor. Plus the knowledge and expertise built up on a host of matters over nearly 30 years as a trade union representative and the last 10 years as a local councillor.
