Section 2: Community Involvement
I regularly attend tenants committees in Franche and Habberley and their respective estate walkabouts. I serve on the committee of Community Transport based in Bewdley and always advocate it to those who need the service to go to the Doctors or shopping.
I am the WFDC representative on the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Board Scrutiny Committee and sit as its Chairman.
Section 3: Assisting Constituents
I always prefer meeting people wherever possible rather than speaking by phone. Email is a poor third. I still get handwritten letters, but not many.
It is very important to be aware of the issues in ones ward and I am. We get “hot spots” throughout the year, which can last days, weeks or months. I am always open to proper requests from ward residents who want help. I often go to their homes, if required and keep in touch. I always take each job seriously, put it to the relevant person or officer and always report back to the constituent who asked me for help.
Section 4: Supplementary Information
Within WFDC, I am the Leader of the Labour Group and attend extra meetings with officers and other members.
I sit on the Local Plans Review Panel and the Appointments and Appeals Committee. I usually attend the Cabinet and Overview and Scrutiny Committee as an observer. Members Forums can be useful platforms for topical issues being addressed by professionals and I appreciate that facility.
In conclusion, being a Councillor is all about representing others, whichever way they voted, and fighting hard for their interests, with the perspective of my values as an individual and Labour party activist.
